Use within hospitality.

Over the last 2 years I have been working within the bar industry at one of the biggest brands in the UK.

While still working to continue to produce art and improve my skills in my spare time. I have been able to incorporate the use of my skills in a variety of ways, from promoting products to creating some of the learning aids depicted below.

Final concept: The barbie.

Rough 1: During 2023 during the launch of the barbie movie, I was inspired to try and imagine a cocktail that we could capitalise on that while also helping to solve the needs of the business. The aim was to capture the essence of the movie and capitalise on the perceptions/hype around it.

Hospitality in comparison to other industries has a relatively high turnover rate. The menus frequently change and drink specifications fluctuate. The goal for consistency across the whole brand is challenging to achieve.

While performing the role of Team Trainer and Team Leader I recognised the differing learning styles within the team. I sought to provide realistic examples of the cocktails to ensure the standard/image the brand desired each product to have, could be achieved more easily.

I aimed to create revision cards that could be used by both staff with more traditional learning styles and for those more kinaesthetically inclined something more visual/interactive.

I landed on the idea of a playing card game. I could use these for random spot tests or to play games with staff.

I started by making each of the cocktails and photographing them. This was inspired by a bi-weekly challenge created within the company. The best photos of selected cocktails would win a prize and be featured in the following newsletter.

This was going to be a vital component of the cards. The pictures would reinforce the finish each drink should have. Fulfilling expectations of both the brand and customers.

Example 1: Gold digger

After creating the template, I was able to then quickly integrate each of the cocktails on the menu at the time. The cards contained, interesting facts, glass type icons and star difficulty.

Creating interest in the history and culture each drink possessed, while increasing their knowledge of the subject. In turn instilling confidence in making recommendations when requested.

Example 2: While composing the images I wanted to show the ingredients and flavours the cocktails contained.

By capturing the visual essence of the drink within the cards, I aimed to reinforce and expand upon the bartender’s current knowledge and confidence around the products they were selling.

Example 3: When looking at other card games I wanted to try and have each one feel like it was unique and special. While also relating to the cocktail it represented through the colour schemes and textures used.

Final Product: After finalising the designs, I was able to upload the files and send to print. I used a company that prints industry standard playing cards in order to deliver the professional finish I had envisioned at the start of this project. This allowed for a level of robustness that would be required for use within the intended environment.
