Sketch book 2022/24

This section will contain many of the sketches, experiments, concepts and doodles. Many of which are still ongoing and shall be built upon/ returned to when possible.

Whether it was to improve on technique, colour theory, style development or to capture a story idea this is how I like to practice and improve while enjoying the process.

I always had an interest in the mythical beasts and fantasy that stories and art could bring to life. I wanted to try and imagine what a tricorn (a unicorn with three horns) might be like if it ever existed. Using references of existing animals and deciding which of the characteristics fit what I had envisioned. This was the design I was happy with. This was slightly harder than most humanoid creatures I had drawn In the past as I did not have the same level of anatomical knowledge to pull from. - 07/2024

Abstract of ruins of an island type outpost, an attempt at trying to recreate the effect when using oil paint/pastels when creating work traditionally. -06/2024

Being able to view my roughs at a distance allowed me to see if the composition worked and identify any changes that need to be made.

Playing around with different brushes to create more tradition media style. Aiming to create a sense of scale by positioning town beside the figures arm. -04/2024

Inspired by Stonehenge and the Giants causeway, I wanted to try creating an interesting, ancient floating rock formation. pulling inspiration from the fantastical theories surrounding sites such as those mentioned prior. Due to the lack of atmospheric perspective, it’s hard to infer the distances between the floating islands.-04/2024

Further practice of seascapes and trying to understand how reflections are produced and how to translate that into a painting. -05/2024

-04/2024

Focusing on trying to creative a more narrative concept, I tried to focus on how this house would work and be accessible while designing. Who would live there and why amongst other things. -04/2024

During university whist taking part in a module dedicated to traditional printing methods and bookmaking. I had created a screen print of a design where books hung from the benches of a tree. The idea being what stories could tree tell us, what has it witnessed while standing alone for all those years. What stories would the pages it produced tell us?

Alien - 01/2024

Sketching poses to try and find one that felt uncomfortable and unusual, something that seemed like an imitation of how Humans would walk. I wanted to experiment with poses. The intention being it would subconsciously emphasise the ominous feeling the topic of UFOs and aliens evoke in pop culture. - 01/2024

While watching the film during the build-up to Halloween. I was inspired to then try and recreate a Coraline styled caricature with vibrant colours. Sketching multiple ideas, I was able to arrive at one which best captured the subject’s likeness. -09/2023

Reimagining the subject as a Coraline character. ensuring to transfer their likeness into that world and style. -10/2023

Concept art, during this I was focusing on the details that bring things to life such as fur lining under armour, so it was more comfortable while wearing. How the armour would be attached and secured in order to withstand combat. - 03/2023

Breaking down the different forms allowed me to better understand how they would interact with each other. Making sure that the items of clothing would make sense in the environment the character was in. - 03/2023

Aim was to practice creating depth between the feathers of the wings. I wanted to attempt to aid in the recreation of a sketch I produced during my school days. I learned a lot about technique and values during this exercise. - 02/2023

Original sketch from my GCSE sketchbook. I wanted to attempt to recreate now that I had the skills and knowledge of anatomy to do so. - 2015

I wanted to try to subtly infer that the angel depicted was facing an internal struggle and that the these conveyed that message more efficiently. Leading up to this I messed around with the framing of the image as I didn’t like the original. -04/2023

Random doodles experimenting with the utilisation of light and focal points to guide the viewer to the important narrative aspects of the image. I also didn’t want to try reimagining the dragon to be more unique in comparison to those commonly depicted in western culture. - 06/2023

Cherry moon - 01/2023

Wanted to depict a rock formation out at sea and create a narrative around it to give it some significance. I was also experimenting with how you can use form to guide the eye following the cherry blossoms from the tree down the image to the bottom of the stack formation.

Technical practice, at the time I had just bought an iPad and was trying to understand the limits of the software Procreate. I also wanted to try and practice how fabrics can be affected by physics and how light may interact with dynamic surfaces. - 12/2022

While playing around with different layer settings that differed from those of adobe, I aimed to try and recreate a facial burn and how that may appear. The story I created in my head for this was that he had been caught in a forest fire in which he supposed to reside over. - 12/2022

Roughly playing around with shadows. I find by doing it this way I can see early on how the image might look and any changes that may need to be made. - 12/2022

Continuing to see how different layer settings can interact with each other in ways that could achieve the desired outcome in shorter time periods. - 07/2023
