Sketchbook 2023/24 Character design/concept :Tooth fairy

Working within the hospitality industry, comes with challenges. With any job you have to take some time for yourself and unwind.

Over the last 2 years, the majority of time I have been able to allocate to my creative side had been those weekend late nights/early mornings.

This may give some insight into the nature of these peculiar creatures and the thought process behind their creation.

While thinking about this obviously very serious and real species, I thought about what different types of tooth fairy's would make them and their culture feel more real and intricate. Hierarchies, Royalty/nobility, jobs and what that civilisation would be like.

Canine: I decided to name each body type after those of teeth (deciduous, canine, molar, wise).

Scale: Once I had created the 3 body types of this creature now looked more like a species. I then wanted to create a scale guide so that I could in the future keep the figures consistent throughout future works.

Left: Deciduous. Middle: Molar. Right: Canine.

Queen: The insect-like characteristics of which these creatures possessed, made obvious to me that they would need a queen not unlike bees/ants. In comparison to the others, I wanted this one to seem more human and civilised. Due to this I decided upon a pose that I thought was visually imposing, yet regal. A clear differentiation from the others.

The Old One(Wisdom): Once I came up with the idea of the queen. I thought who she descends from that gives her such authority and stature over the others. Of course, bigger is better. An ancient ruler forgotten by time, cursed by the boredom of an abundance of power without a rival that can equalled their own. A fairy tale amongst fairy tales.
